What it addresses

What it addresses

This covers fractures and injuries of the limbs and other bones, including more complex trauma. The right treatment depends on the bone involved, the pattern of the break, and the patient's overall condition.

  • Simple and closed fractures
  • Complex, comminuted, and intra-articular fractures
  • Fractures in older adults, including the hip
  • Injuries involving more than one fracture

Typical procedures

What treatment generally involves

Some fractures heal well with a cast or brace and time; others are realigned and held with plates, screws, or rods. Which approach is right is decided from examination and imaging.

  • Non-surgical treatment with casts or braces, where suitable
  • Closed reduction to realign a fracture
  • Surgical fixation with plates, screws, or rods
  • Staged care for complex or multiple injuries

Approach

Dr. Vikram's approach

Each fracture is assessed individually; not every break needs an operation. When surgery is needed, fellowship training in complex trauma and completion of the AO Trauma course inform the plan. The condition, the options, and the reasoning are explained to patient and family.

Recovery

What recovery generally looks like

Bone healing takes time and varies with the fracture, the bone, age, and general health. Rehabilitation often follows once healing allows, to restore movement and strength. A follow-up schedule tracks healing for each patient.
