Arthroscopy & Sports Injuries

Arthroscopy is keyhole surgery that lets a joint be examined and, where needed, treated through small incisions. It is often used for sports and joint injuries such as ligament and meniscus problems.

What it addresses

What it addresses

Arthroscopy is generally used for injuries inside a joint — most often the knee or shoulder — when imaging and examination point to a problem that may benefit from a keyhole procedure.

  • ACL and other knee ligament injuries
  • Meniscus (knee cartilage) tears
  • Certain shoulder injuries and instability
  • Some cases of ongoing joint pain after injury

Typical procedures

What the procedure generally involves

A small camera and instruments are passed into the joint through small incisions, so the inside of the joint can be seen and, where appropriate, repaired or trimmed.

  • Diagnostic arthroscopy to assess a joint
  • Ligament reconstruction, where indicated
  • Repair or trimming of meniscus tears
  • Treatment of certain shoulder conditions

Approach

Dr. Vikram's approach

Not every sports injury needs surgery. Where medically appropriate, rest, physiotherapy, and a graded return to activity are considered first. When arthroscopy is recommended, the reasons and what it can and cannot achieve are explained, drawing on fellowship training in arthroscopy and a diploma in FIFA Football Medicine.

Recovery

What recovery generally looks like

Recovery depends heavily on the injury and the procedure. Some keyhole procedures allow a relatively quick return to gentle activity; ligament reconstructions usually need a structured, longer rehabilitation. A specific plan is set for each injury and reviewed at follow-up.
