Reconstruction

Deformity Correction

Deformity correction realigns limbs or joints that are bent, twisted, or unequal in length — whether present from birth or developed after injury or disease. It is planned individually after careful assessment.

What it addresses

What it addresses

Deformity correction is considered for limbs or joints that are misaligned in a way that affects function, movement, or comfort, and that is unlikely to improve on its own.

  • Bow legs, knock knees, and similar limb misalignment
  • Deformity following a fracture that healed out of line
  • Limb-length differences
  • Some deformities present from birth

Typical procedures

What treatment generally involves

The approach depends on the cause and the joint or bone involved. Treatment is planned from examination and imaging, and may be staged. Some deformities are addressed surgically; others may be managed without surgery.

  • Surgical realignment of bone (osteotomy), where indicated
  • Gradual correction techniques in selected cases
  • Correction of deformity from a poorly healed fracture
  • Detailed pre-operative planning and imaging

Approach

Dr. Vikram's approach

Deformity correction is detailed work that is planned carefully for each patient, drawing on fellowship training in deformity correction. Where a non-surgical option is reasonable, it is considered. When surgery is recommended, the plan, the stages, and what it aims to achieve are explained in advance.

Recovery

What recovery generally looks like

Recovery depends on the deformity and the technique used, and can be staged over a longer period. Rehabilitation usually accompanies it. A specific plan and follow-up schedule are set for each patient and reviewed as correction progresses.
